Edexcel GCSE (9–1) Religious Studies B · Paper 1, Question 3 · Christianity Harlington School · SumHclass grade

Living the Christian Life

Eight topics, one summit. The divergent views set side by side, the key ideas connected, and the (d) evaluated the Level-4 way, everything for the top of the mark scheme, in one place.

The
big
question

How is Christian belief actually LIVED: in worship, prayer, pilgrimage and mission?

01

The divergent views explorer

Every (d) in this unit turns on the divergent views: set side by side, exactly as the examiner wants. Pick a topic, then tap a position to see what it claims. The Grade 9 move and the 7-minute discussion question travel with each topic.

Tap a circle, or use Tab and Enter, to explore each position.

The thread that ties it together

Grade 9 is not more content: it is three habits applied to every topic. Spot them and every (d) in this unit opens the same way.

Divergent views, side by side

Never one view at a time. Set them against each other: where they agree, and the exact point they part. That comparison IS the analysis.

The (d) regulation

Chain each point (claim → because → this means → therefore), steelman the other side, weigh BOTH arguments, a strength AND a limit, then justify the conclusion.

Textbook-first accuracy

A correctly named source beats a vague paraphrase. One learned line from each source, placed precisely, is worth more than a paragraph of drift.

02

Eight topics, one summit

Each panel is a topic’s key idea: the connective explanation that links the key words into one argument. Learn the chain, not the list.

Topic 1 · C17

Worship

What is worship, and why do Christians worship in such different ways?
LECTIONARYA set list of Bible readings for each day, used by all liturgical churches so nothing is skipped.
THE YEARRuns Advent → Christmas → Lent → Easter → Pentecost, so worship follows Jesus’ life, not just the calendar.
THREE-YEAR CYCLEAcross three years the congregation hears MOST of the Bible read aloud, without reading alone at home.
SOWorshippers re-live the whole story of Christ together, building shared heritage and belonging, by design, not chance.
Topic 2 · C19

Prayer

What is prayer for, and why do Christians pray in set words and in their own?
VOCALPrayer using words, aloud or in the mind, the most common kind, and the easiest for beginners to learn.
MEDITATIONMoving past words to think deeply about religious matters, so the mind engages with God, not just the mouth.
CONTEMPLATIONThe deepest kind: wordless communion, simply being with God, valued by monks for a lifetime of practice.
THROUGHOUTThe four purposes, adoration, thanksgiving, confession, supplication, run through all three, from words to silence.
Topic 3 · C18

Sacraments

What are the sacraments, and why do Catholics, Baptists and Methodists value them so differently?
BIRTHBaptism makes you a member of the Church and washes away original sin, the Catechism calls it the basis of Christian life.
GROWTHConfirmation and the weekly Eucharist feed and strengthen faith, giving grace for the week ahead.
TURNING POINTSReconciliation, marriage and holy orders give grace at life’s big moments, from sin to marriage to ministry.
DEATHAnointing of the sick prepares the dying for death, once called the last rites, so their sins are forgiven.
Topic 4 · C20

Pilgrimage

Why do Christians go on pilgrimage, and why do Protestants and Catholics disagree about it?
PENANCESinners went to show God they were sorry; priests even sent people on pilgrimage as a penance for serious sins.
EFFORTPlanning, time and hardship force a pilgrim to weigh what really matters, adding discipline to their faith.
HOLINESSPilgrims hope some of a holy place’s holiness, tied to a saint or to Jesus himself, will “rub off” on them.
HEALINGAt Lourdes few are physically cured, yet many pilgrims gain inner strength to cope with illness and suffering.
Topic 5 · C21

Celebrations

What do Christians celebrate at Christmas and Easter, and why do these festivals matter today?
BEFOREBefore the incarnation, sin allowed only a PARTIAL relationship between humanity and God.
INCARNATION (Christmas)God becomes man in Jesus at Christmas. The rescue begins, and without it there is no Christianity at all.
RESURRECTION (Easter)Through Jesus’ death and rising at Easter, the power of sin is cancelled and forgiveness is assured.
RESULTA FULL relationship with God becomes possible, giving Christians the hope of heaven after death.
Topic 6 · C23

The Church

What does the Church do for the local community and the world, and should each area have just one church?
SINHumanity was split from God by sin, breaking the full relationship people were meant to have with him.
CROSSJesus’ death brought forgiveness, reconciling God and humans and undoing the damage caused by sin.
THEREFOREChristians must work to reconcile people split from each other, copying what Christ already did for them.
AT EVERY SCALEThe same logic runs from the local parish food bank to the World Council of Churches in Geneva.
Topic 7 · C22

Mission

Why do Christians do missionary and evangelical work, and do all Christians think they should?
APOSTLESPeter, Philip and Paul spread the faith across the Roman Empire from day one, founding churches as they went.
EAST & FARThomas reached India by 52CE, Armenia was Christian by 300CE, and China had believers by 600CE.
THE SLAVSCyril invented the Cyrillic alphabet so the Bible could be translated for Russia and the Slavs.
TODAYThe baton has passed: Latin American, African and Korean missionaries now serve all over the world.
Topic 8 · C24

Church growth

Is the worldwide Church growing or shrinking, and what happens where it is not safe to be a Christian?
NORTH KOREAAll 300,000 North Korean Christians must worship the leader, making another faith an act against the state.
STRICT SHARI’AHIn states under strict Shari’ah law, converting away from Islam is treated as a criminal offence.
SOMALIA / ISAl-Shabaab and Islamic State have demanded Christians convert, pay a punitive tax, or be killed.
COMMON THREADWherever one power claims total loyalty, a rival faith becomes a threat to be silenced or removed.

How to revise this unit

Use the resources in this order: the same loop as the lessons, so revision feels like coming home.

Bell work first · retrieve before you re-read

Five recall questions from memory, self-scored /5. Then the come-back tracker: the same five at +1 week and +1 month.

Listen along to the episode

One six-minute podcast per topic. Capture the six mind-map branches as it plays. The episode does the exposition so you can do the thinking.

Work the booklet pages

Four pages per topic: the key idea, two source quotes, the divergent views side by side, and the full (d). The Key Idea edition adds the 7-minute discussion.

Write the (d) the Level-4 way

Chain · steelman · weigh both (strength AND limit) · justify. Check yourself against the Level 3-vs-Level 4 models on lessons 3 and 6.

The marks map · (a) (b) (c) · 12 marks
(a) 3 marks · outline three. Three crisp sentences, no development needed.
(b) 4 marks · explain two. Each point + one development.
(c) 5 marks · explain two WITH a named source: one learned line, placed exactly.
The (d) · 12 marks · half the question
What it is · a full evaluation: agree and disagree developed, the non-religious voice engaged where the question invites it.
The grade 9 gap · Level 3 asserts its judgement; Level 4 chains, weighs both sides, and justifies a conclusion that survives the strongest counter.
05

Watch: the whole unit in one go

A full review of Living the Christian Life: all eight topics as one argument. Best watched before you revise, then again to check recall.
